Design Studio

Really nice work from Design Studio. They seem to have quite a unique way of mixing traditional and very contemporary styles which makes a really interesting aesthetic. I also really like the way they deal with colour, they mix some colours I'd usually be wouldnt put together but they get away with it really well. I think wie haben das gemahct is 'what have you made?'

Manystuff #1

The great blog manystuff has just brought out it's first editorial release, entitled 'One possible catalyst'. The journal combines some very refined typography with symbolic and almost info graphical illustration in places which is a disciplin I am a bit fan of. Some of the type seems to be laid out in quite an experimental way which almost becomes a part of the illustration in places which is a really intriguing idea. It might have been nice to see how they could have brought colour in though.

Filippo Nostri

Some great book and zine design from Filippo Nostri, who works quite predominantly with this sort of design. He works really well with wrapping images round the spine of books which I think works really well, his layouts lend themselves to a very lofi zine aesthetic but at the same time they seem really considered and elegant.

Slanted Magazine

The new slanted magazine has come out, this issue is called 'Heavy Metal Lovers' which sees some quite heavy and gothic typography. I think the type works really well with the ultra bold shapes and loud colours. I think that fluorescent paper might be making a but of a comeback judging from this and Craig Oldham's new 10 Penneth zine.

Johannes Breyer

Another example here of a multi sized editorial piece working really well. This particular project uses three different sizes which pushes the trend even further. It has quite a minimal and experimental layout with some of the larger pages turned completely on their side, all the print markings such as crop marks and colour bars have been left on the big pages which I also think adds a certain aesthetic to the piece. The 1, 2, 3 on the front cover it increasingly larger type works really effectively.

Jeremy Jansen

I was lucky enough to have a look through this book as Joe brought it in one day, it's a collection of work all made at Werkplaats Typografie, Karel Martens two year masters course, The book is great but I had previously not known who has designed it, now I know it was Jeremy Jansen. I like the way that the whole book reads very much like a scrapbook which fits the concept of the book very well, I also like the combination of 4 colour and monotone pages and also the ring bind. I usually don't like ring bound books but I think for this project it was a great choice.

Rob Van Hoesel

Super simple and  typography and really slick layout and coloured stock brought together in some more really stylish looking books and zines. Everything seems really well balanced and gridded up while still keeping that almost collaged and very natural feel of a photography zine which is quite hard to do.

Hunt Studio

Identity for Cross section studio looks great, has immediate impact on the print work and works across a whole range of media really simply and well. Also just done the new process journal which has been receiving a fair bit of attention on quite a few design blogs, the spreads look really interesting.

Martine Mathijsen

Amazing book and zine design. The combination of black text and monotoned photographs looks great in the middle book. She also uses different sized pages to great effect. Seems to be able to use typography and layout in a flawlessly stylish way.

Socio Design

Brand guidelines book for Truth by Socio Design. The colour scheme isn't great in my opinion however the layout of the book is done really well. I think it's a hard task to put together this sort of information (which can often be quite benine) in an interesting way but it's done quite effectively here.
